It costs around £25,000 - £30,000 per year to run the team effectively. Much of this money is spent on equipment which includes maintaining our Rescue Base in Newton Stewart and our fleet of three rescue vehicles.
Many people don't appreciate that all mountain rescue teams in the United Kingdom are voluntary charitable organisations who rely upon public support to provide an emergency service.
Our Base and Volkswagen Caravelle 4x4 personnel carrier are generously funded by the Order of St John Scotland as part of their national ongoing support for Mountain Rescue across Scotland. The Team receives additional help with the purchase of equipment from the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland (MRCofS) and more recently the Scottish Government has introduced small annual grants for Scottish MR teams, but a significant amount of the equipment is bought through local fund raising activities.

Team members commit a considerable amount of their own time annually to carry out street collections, organise raffles, sell team merchandise and provide a presence at a range of local events.

On the evening of Saturday 23rd February, GMRT were called out to 3 walkers who had become disorientated on Cairnsmore of Fleet. The missing people were located by Team Members and supported off the hill. They were cold and tired but otherwise fine.
